Tucked along Glengarriff, where ancient oak trees meet the sea, Dromgarriff Rainforest is an invitation to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with a place of green calm. This private estate, set within one of Ireland’s rarest oakwood forests, is now open to guests in a new way – with five beautifully individual houses available to rent, each offering a different way to experience the land, the water, the woods, and the deep peace of this extraordinary corner of the country.

These five one-of-a-kind homes sit among ancient trees and cascading waterfalls. Under the care of the Meehan family – Bryan and Tara Meehan are also the custodians of Park Hotel Kenmare – the estate is stepping into a new chapter. Their focus is on careful stewardship of the oakwood, which is considered part of Ireland’s temperate rainforest, and on welcoming guests who value not just comfort, but connection to place.

A Storied Past Preserved

Once part of the same woodland that surrounded Glengarriff National Park, the oakwood was home to Roche’s Royal Hotel in the 19th century, designed by architect Edward Roche. Although a fire in 1910 damaged the original building, remnants of terraces, railings, and rock gardens still whisper stories in the landscape.

A Living, Breathing Landscape

Dromgarriff isn’t just a collection of houses – it’s a living oakwood rainforest, brimming with waterfalls (five on the Barony and Dromgarriff rivers), ancient oaks, birch, holly, hazel, and aspen. Dromgarriff Rainforest spans around 50 acres of one of Ireland’s last temperate oakwood rainforests, nurtured by the mild Gulf Stream winds, gifting it a near-subtropical feel, rich with lichen, ferns, fuchsia, and lush moss.

The woodland is part of a fragile but thriving ecosystem, alive with birdsong, deer, and wildflowers. Protecting this environment is at the heart of Bryan and Tara’s plans for the estate. From rewilding projects and woodland care to working with local conservation groups, the forest is being carefully nurtured from invasive growth and deer grazing, ensuring its ancient beauty thrives for generations to come.

Here, the energy of land and water come together in one deeply peaceful escape.

The Houses

Dromgarriff offers five distinctive houses dotted across the estate and each with its own personality. Each house has its own character and design, and is self-contained, yet all are rooted in the landscape, light-filled, and with the same sense of being embraced by forest and sea.

  • Silver Birch is a grand 11-bedroom house with seven ensuites, a sauna, two living rooms with open fires and sweeping views of the bay, and a big terrace with barbecue. Perfect for extended-family gatherings or corporate and wellbeing escapes right at the water’s edge.

  • Linden has ten bedrooms and ten bathrooms, a cozy nook in a large kitchen, vaulted ceilings, stunning bay views, a wood-burning fire, a purpose-built stunning yoga and community room that overlooks Bantry Bay, an indoor sauna, plus terrace and barbecue for al fresco dinners. Linden is ideal for yoga and wellness, cultural and culinary retreats. This newly renovated house, designed by Japanese architect, Jo Nagasaka of Schemata Architects, is minimalist in design and offers a private sanctuary in the heart of West Cork.

  • Holly is the smallest of the main trio of houses, yet full of the same thoughtful design signature – a sleek, snug retreat that still feels spacious, with the same natural materials and views framed by woodland. Holly has three ensuite bedrooms, and two terraces, big views over the forest to the mountains, a wood-burning stove, and its own sauna – ideal for smaller groups wanting contemporary comfort immersed in nature.

These three modern masterpieces of stone and slate, with natural cork insulation, were created to blend gently with oak, aspen, birch, and the horizon beyond. With floor‑to‑ceiling living‑room windows, mid‑century vintage pieces, contemporary art and locally made furniture, these spaces feel both modern and grounded.

Maple and Aspen are the final two houses, adorable traditional-style Irish cottages tucked into the woods. Each has its own outdoor area, rustic charm, and warmth – perfect for couples or intimate stays, with local furniture and countryside character shining through.

  • Maple has three bedrooms (one ensuite and two twins), and is tucked into a secret Victorian rockery garden from the era of Roche’s Royal Hotel (circa 1862). Quaint and atmospheric, with an open fire, loft gallery, and history in every stone.

  • Aspen has three bedrooms (one ensuite, two twins sharing a bathroom) and has rustic charm with its stone construction, wood-burning stove, and a sunny terrace by the Barony River.

All five stand in glorious solitude or can be booked individually or together for retreats or extended families – a rare opportunity for privacy and scale in one of West Cork’s most beautiful settings.
